Testing the Specification of the Mincer Wage Equation

چکیده
Testing the Specification of the Mincer Wage Equation I perform the joint estimation of a reduced-form dynamic model of the transition from one grade level to the next, and a Mincer wage equation, using panel data taken from the NLSY. A very high degree of flexibility is achieved by approximating the distributions of idiosyncractic grade transition shocks and wage shocks with high dimensional normal mixtures. The model rejects all simplifying assumptions common in the empirical literature. In particular, the log wage regression is highly convex, even after conditioning on unobserved and observed skills. Skill heterogeneity is also found to be over-estimated when non-linearity is ignored. After conditioning on skill heterogeneity, I also find evidence of non-separability between the effect of schooling and experience (schooling has a positive effect on wage growth). Finally, the variance of the idiosyncratic wage shock is reduced by obtaining higher education. JEL Classification: J2, J3

Global Wage Inequality and the International Flow of Migrants
A framework for understanding the determinants in the variation in the pricing of skills across countries and the model underlying the Mincer specification of wages that is used widely to estimate the relationship between schooling and wages are described. A method for identifying skill prices and for testing the Mincer model, using wages and the human capital attributes of workers located arou...
متن کاملReturns to education and wage equations
The paper shows why considering a number of education-dependent covariates in a wage equation decreases the coefficient of education in that equation. This result is illustrated empirically with a meta-analysis for Portugal. The education coefficient decreases when covariates are used that can be considered post-education decisions; on the other hand, it is independent of sample size, tenure an...
متن کاملMeasuring Human Capital and Its Effects on Wage Growth
Ever since Mincer, years of labour market experience were used to approximate individual’s general human capital, while years of seniority were used to approximate job-specific human capital. This specification is restrictive because it assumes that starting wages at a new job depend only on job market experience. In this paper, I investigate the effects of human capital on wage growth by using...
متن کاملEstimating Externalities to Experience in a Macro Mincer Model
This paper presents evidence that the age structure of the workforce matters for productivity. At first glance, this is unsurprising because standard Mincerian wage regressions show that workers with more schooling and more experience receive higher wages. If workers earn their marginal product, then the wage differential described by the Mincer evidence is a measure of the productivity differe...

Do Students Expect Compensation for Wage Risk? We use a unique data set about the wage distribution that Swiss students expect for themselves ex ante, deriving parametric and non-parametric measures to capture expected wage risk. These wage risk measures are unfettered by heterogeneity which handicapped the use of actual market wage dispersion as risk measure in earlier studies. Students in our...
